Q:We have a 25-foot avocado tree in our backyard. It has fallen over twice duringthe hurricanes of the last four years (both directions). We have had it supported with wood ever since. We had a great crop of avocados this year and the tree is very healthy.

A: If it has fallen twice, it's time to remove it and replace it.The roots will never recover their former stability. Even though the tree may look fine and still bear fruit, it's a hazard and will become more so.
In general, fallen mature trees should be removed unless historic or rare. Young trees can be uprighted and staked.
Avoid using wood as supports for broadleaf trees. Wood is the recommended support for palms but not for other plants since they limit plant movement too much.
It has been found that fallen or leaning medium-aged and mature trees usually suffer severe major root breakage. Once cut or broken, these roots will not reconnect well into the soil and are unlikely to develop the root structure needed to keep the tree erect. Also, large broken roots can decay or rot, making the tree unstable.
