Brutus just wants to mate

Q: My dog Brutus is a 150-pound Rottweiler. He's a gorgeous dog but he can be a bit of a bully when my female Rottweiler is in heat. I want to breed her to a dog with a better temperament so it's important that Brutus not mate with her. Unfortunately, it's hard to keep them apart -- Brutus will jump fences to get to her. I don't want to neuter him but I was considering a vasectomy. Our vet says he doesn't do this procedure but I read about it on your blog. Is Brutus a good candidate?

Q: Our dog, an old Doberman named Pansy, has lumps all over her body. The vet has checked every one of them with a needle and keeps a chart in her file so she can add any new ones and keep track of the old ones. Luckily, they're all benign fatty tumors that don't need to be surgically removed.

Missy the cat died after spaying surgery

Q: My vet messed up. He tied the wrong tubes when he spayed my cat Missy and she died several days later due to surgical complications related to the loss of her kidneys. He says it was a common complication of this kind of surgery but what I've read on the Internet leads me to believe this isn't true. I can't forgive him but I also don't have the money for a lawyer to help me sue him to get justice on Missy's behalf. What can people in my situation do to deal with this kind of senseless loss?

Who is responsible for taking care of ailing strays?

Q: I have a question about cat ownership. My neighbor feeds a group of neighborhood strays. But whenever they get sick, they hide in my yard. She says that means that I have to care for their illness. But I suspect that when they're sick in her yard she doesn't take care of them. So who's right?

Q: I need to spay my dog, a 3-year-old mix named Holly. The trouble is, I'm so scared of anesthesia I can't bring myself to have it done. I'm a responsible dog owner and I would never let her breed another dog but I know she'll live longer if she's fixed. What should I do?

At this time of year, veterinarians are especially concerned about what their patients may be eating. Every year we see pets brought in with very preventable illnesses caused by improper feeding or a lack of proper safeguards for the garbage can.

Q: I have a young, healthy male cat named Mink. He lives indoors and gets the best food, toys and veterinary care available. The problem is that I'm a vegan. I have a hard time knowing even the high-quality foods he's eaten all his life come from animals raised on inhumane factory farms. Recently I've been transitioning him to a commercial vegan feline diet but Mink hasn't been taking well to it. My vet thinks I'm crazy to try this, by the way.

Q: I just moved from Canada to Miami Beach and I'm confused about how I'm supposed to get a license for my pets. I have four cats and a dog. Where I come from we are not required to keep licenses for animals. Could you explain how and why this is done?

Q: I'm shopping for a puppy but I can't seem to find the right breed for my family. Recently I came across some hybrid breeds I thought might work out, but the Labradoodle is too big and the Puggle sheds too much. Can you help us with a smallish breed that doesn't shed much? My son is allergic to dogs, so this is crucial.

Q: We've got a 15-year-old cat named Copernicus. He'd been losing drastic amounts of weight recently in spite of a healthy appetite so we took him to the vet to get him checked out. It turns out he has hyperthyroidism and our veterinarian wants us to consider a special radioactive injection treatment. It's very expensive and we're afraid that he's too old to put him through it. What do you think?
