New tropical depression forms in SW Caribbean

ebenn@MiamiHerald.com

Hurricane season's not over yet.

Here's a reminder: Storm specialists at the National Hurricane Center say a tropical depression formed Wednesday in the Southwestern Caribbean. It's located near Honduras and Nicaragua -- and expected to hover near their coastlines for the next several days. Both countries issued tropical storm watches.

The depression had maximum sustained winds of 30 mph Wednesday evening, but forecasters said it is likely to strengthen into a tropical storm.

The storm could take a northeast turn by the weekend and possibly head toward Cuba, the hurricane center projected. But it may be awhile before the system makes its way across the Caribbean -- forecasters said late-season storms tend to be especially slow-moving. The hurricane season -- which forecasters recently called ''the year of close calls'' for Florida -- ends Nov. 30.
