Editorials

  • Do Not Call registry due for a tune up

Five years have passed since the Federal Trade Commission created a national Do Not Call registry -- and considering the rapid changes in marketing and telecommunications, it is time for an update of the rules. It just so happens that the FTC is considering revising its regulations to make it even clearer that marketers can only call customers who have given their consent. The changes are necessary and should be adopted.

  • The Miami Herald recommends

For Broward County Circuit Court, Group 27

The retirement of Broward Circuit Judge Leroy Moe created a vacancy that prompted three candidates to file for this race: Steven B. Feren, 57, mayor of Sunrise with 28 years as a general-practice lawyer; Mark W. Rickard, 48, a civil attorney for 12 years; and Edmond Sugar, 46, a court arbitrater and civil attorney with 21 years' experience.

  • The Miami Herald recommends

For Broward County Circuit Court, Group 34

In this race, Judge Renee Goldenberg, who is seeking her third term in office, is being challenged by Kim T. Mollica, a divorce lawyer. Incumbent judges who are doing a good job aren't often challenged in Broward County, but in this case, Ms. Mollica, 45, believes she can make a difference for the better. She wants to improve access to the courts for litigants and says that judges sometimes waste lawyers' time by having them wait hours for their cases to be heard.

  • AMERICAN HISTORY

You think slavery ended in 1865?

This is how John Davis became a slave: He was walking one evening from the train depot in Goodwater, Ala., when a white man appeared in the road. ''Nigger,'' he demanded, ``have you got any money?''

  • SOUTH AMERICA

    Defense council goes nowhere

Late last month, the presidents and representatives of 12 South American countries met in Brazil to sign a pact creating the Union of South American Nations (Unasur). The agenda was supposed to include the creation of a South American Defense Council (SDC). The announced purpose of the SDC was to mediate regional conflicts and defend South America from foreign intervention. It came as no surprise to many observers that the creation of a regional defense council was postponed, perhaps indefinitely...

  • COLLEGIATE SPORTS

    Competition vs. academic standards

Recently NBC renewed its television contract with Notre Dame football through the 2015 season, betting the bank that the Irish, who have not won a national championship since 1988 or a bowl game since 1993, can consistently deliver ratings that keep corporate sponsors happy and revenue streams flowing.

  • GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

    Fiddling while the planet burns

The G-8 Summit in Japan earlier this month was a painful demonstration of the pitiful state of global cooperation. The world is in deepening crisis. Food prices are soaring. Oil prices are at historic highs. The leading economies are entering a recession. Climate change negotiations are going around in circles. Aid to the poorest countries is stagnant, despite years of promised increases. And yet in this gathering storm it was hard to find a single real accomplishment by the world's leaders.

  • PRESIDENTIAL RACE

Right veep choice can help McCain compete

Last week, The Washington Post published a poll of registered voters giving Barack Obama an eight-point lead -- largely because the voters said they trusted him more than John McCain on handling their No. 1 issue, the economy, by an astounding 19 percentage points.

Letters to the Editor

  • Best place to watch Marlins?

I was surprised that the July 18 story Marlins win, but fans fail to fill seats did not address one of the main reasons for low attendance at Florida Marlins games: The concession prices are outrageous.

  • Mortgage fraud revealed

The Miami Herald series Borrowers betrayed reveals the depth of mortgage fraud in South Florida. How could this happen with so many state leaders in charge?

  • FCAT unfairly labels kids

Branding children or their schools with labels, as the FCAT does, goes against every modern educational imperative. Yet it is the law. Educated people won't send their children to a D or F school.
