Marifeli Pérez-Stable is vice president for democratic governance at the Inter-American Dialogue in Washington, D.C., and a professor at Florida International University. Her opinion pieces have appeared in El País, Financial Times, El Clarín, Excelsior, El Nuevo Herald and The Nation. She is also an editorial contributor to the Real Instituto Elcano and Infolatam. She authored The Cuban Revolution: Origins, Course, and Legacy and edited Looking Forward: Comparative Perspectives on Cuban Transition. Looking Forward was a finalist in the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award (2007). She chaired the task force on Memory, Truth and Justice, which issued the report, Cuban National Reconciliation. Cubans here and there still hope for better future

Fifty years ago Cubans rejoiced in the downfall of Fulgencio Batista. Today joy isn't the overriding emotion. Other feelings -- such as apathy, anger, despair and rancor -- dwell in our hearts. Loss and sadness -- over the lives lost, the families sundered, a people's broken faith -- are overwhelming. Only official Cuba revels and marvels over the decades since that long ago Jan. 1.

    On Nov. 23, Hugo Chávez won 75 percent of the posts contested in local, regional and state elections. His candidates rallied 5.4 million votes nationwide against the opposition's 4.4 million. Chavistas prevailed in 17 of the 22 gubernatorial races in play. So, yes, Chávez came out the winner 10 days ago.
